GIVE THANKS!

It's time to give thanks to the Lord above,

For all the blessings and all the love.

For family gatherings at food covered tables,

For extra strength to do tasks we are not able.

For special dreams our faith holds dear,

That encourages us to hold on year after year.

For nights guarded by Angels as we sleep,

For the promise from the Lord, our souls He'll keep.

We set aside this noted calendar day,

To gather to give thanks and pray.

Why must it be only one day a year,

It should be everyday, anytime, everywhere.

When President Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving, he clearly set forth that the purpose was to express thanksgiving to God. Lincoln declared, "The year that is growing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensitive to even watchful providence of Almighty God...I do, therefore, invite my fellow-citizens, in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea, and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father."
